ENNISTYMON MISS OUT ON HISTORIC VISTORY | C.B.S ENNISTYMON & VOCATIONAL SCHOOL

So near but yet so far. The Ennistymon Schools soccer team missed out on a historic Munster Under 16 final defeat when they went down four goals to three against Limerick’s Crescent Comprehensive in Lee’s Road last week. The team which is made up of students from both the Christian Brothers and Vocational School, had already opened a new chapter for schools soccer in North Clare by just reaching the final and came within a whisker of going all the way. A good turnout of supporters from both schools travelled to Ennis for the final and were treated to a cracking game played at a hectic pace. Ennistymon looked more settled in the first half and enjoyed a significant part of the possession. Their dominance was rewarded after just 7 minutes when Sean McConigley opened the scoring for Ennistymon.Minutes later the sides were level when a parried shot by Ennistymon keeper Connole fell to a Cresent attacker who finished easily. The Limerick side went in ahead at half time following an own goal by Ennistymon centre half Michael McDonagh. Ennistymon got off to a flier with a goal from  Killian Malone just after the restart. It was Malone again who put the Clare side into the lead minutes later with a good finish after a Damien Ryan free kick. Crescent came back and levelled the match once again after 60 minutes but with just three minutes to go, the Limerick side broke Ennistymon hearts with a scrambled goal that killed off the match. Best for Ennistymon were Michael McDonagh, Murray Whiteford, Jason Sexton, Sean McConigley, Damien Ryan and Killian Malone. The team had an after match meal at the Falls Hotel where presentations were made to Jason Sexton as Most Valuable Player and Denis Hynes for coaching the squad. (Clare Champion, 2007)
